Every time a new technological trend pops-up it also leads to ‘new born’ thought leaders. Professionals that go the extra mile, take a deep dive and share insights and applications. Since AI took the world by storm and is now also disrupting the world of learning, I created an overview of AI &amp; learning thought leaders that I follow.We need to be grateful for their work and generous sharing. In that sense, this episode of the learning notes is also a way for me to share my appreciation with them for the work they do. Of course, AI is much more than ChatGPT and some of the names in my lists already shared a lot of good and insightful sources and their vision pre-ChatGPT.I feel enough confident to say: if you follow the advice of the people in these lists and apply their proven ‘life hacks’, it will easily save you a few working hours a week. If so, please share your experiences on social media and mention their names to show your appreciation and forward ‘the magic’ to others.I created two lists: one international and one with ‘rockstars’ who share in Dutch (based on some special requests from my readers). Every name has a weblink which directs you to the LinkedIn profile of each person. The order of names is based on ‘ladies first’, followed by alphabetical order of their family name. It&#039;s not a ranking.I very much like the idea of all kinds of AI applications serving us as ‘co-pilots’. I hope you can find some great ‘co-pilots’ via the experts presented that make your life a bit easier. Good luck and let me know if you have figured out something cool.

He is the founder and owner of SLT Consulting. What he wants to learn? He would like to become more of a handyman, so he can lay bricks, build a wooden porch and connect solar panels.

For what part of your job can people wake you up at night?“I love sleeping, so actually not much. But what I like most about learning analytics, which I’m involved in, is that it is almost like detective work. You try to find clues and investigate them. Afterwards, you’re able to give people insights that they have never had before.”What challenge or problem in your job can keep you up at night?“Nowadays, everything around us is data. The biggest companies in the world are data companies. So, if you look at what happens outside of L&amp;D, everyone else seems to be further ahead in this than us. I’m worried that L&amp;D will be taken less seriously if we don’t take data and analytics more seriously. But for a lot of people, this is a thrilling first step because it can be very confrontational.If you think you have a great programme, but the data shows that it doesn’t work, you need to be open to learning and improving. The chance that a learning design is perfect from the start is very small. Data helps you explore whether learning objectives are really achieved. If you don’t, the worst-case scenario is that L&amp;D budgets will be cut since, otherwise, what happens to it can’t be proven. That worries me.”What do you think is the biggest misconception in learning?“That we think that training can solve more than it is actually able to. I think we need to be more modest about that. People learn everywhere. This results in a lot of bias in the interpretation of data.Are you keeping track of how much time people spend on their course and is there an upward trend visible? Then it’s easy to think that people are also learning more. But all you see is how much time they spend on your training. What you don’t see is what people do outside of that: how often they search for something on Google, watch a YouTube video or ask something in their network.So, we overestimate our role in learning and need to look at, in a broader sense, what we as L&amp;D can organise and facilitate.”

What or who is your biggest source of inspiration?“Many thought leaders within L&amp;D have been telling the same story for 10 years. They have written books and spoken at conferences, but what I miss is: how do I actually apply those ideas? That is often the missing link.Mirjam Neelen is an example of a thought leader that actually connects theory and practice. She is involved in evidence-based learning, something that comes close to learning analytics. Without learning analytics, you can’t apply evidence-based learning.Furthermore, it is great to work together with Mirjam. She gives good feedback and is always open to receiving it too. I find that important in a person.”How do you keep challenging yourself?“Something I apply is the concept of ‘stealing with pride’. That means that I look at what happens outside L&amp;D more than on average. For example, I look at marketing and IT a lot, and think about what’s relevant to use in L&amp;D.”How can the impact of learning be increased, according to you?“By using data, to get more insights into the effect of learning journeys. If the data show that the desired outcome isn’t achieved, you can try something else. This is often done in marketing, and they call it A/B testing. One group gets to see the new version while the other group sees the old one. Afterwards, it is possible to compare the results. In L&amp;D, we often don’t have the possibility to compare like that. However, we can be more aware of what works and what doesn’t.”

For what part of your job can people wake you up at night?“At KPE, we personalise every single training. I love that. We are always out to uncover the trainee’s learning needs and the customer’s objectives. After we’ve identified them, they become the starting point for customisation of the learning environment. KPE really focuses on learning needs and makes every learning journey truly personal. Every individual learns differently.With this approach, we can increase learning efficiency. And, very important: for learners, their development becomes more enjoyable!”What challenge or problem in your job can keep you up at night?“The adoption of digital learning interventions can be a challenge. We focus on the construction and property sector, and a part of our target audience is averse to the use of digital tools. Our plan is to move towards EdTech, but it is a challenge to instil an intrinsic motivation in every individual. This is why we frequently set up personal sessions with learners to explore the aNewSpring application. How does it work? That way, we encourage them to use all learning interventions.We also incorporate virtual reality. For example, we have this serious game in which the trainee uses an industrial circular saw at a construction site. With this safe environment, we can create impact and raise interest among the target audience.”What was the best or most valuable mistake you ever made?“When I started out in the field of L&amp;D, I thought short learning journeys were the way to go. This ties in with common expectations that a training is usually a one-time, event-based learning opportunity. You follow it, apply the acquired knowledge – and that’s it. But gradually, I learned that it’s better to follow a long-term approach and spread out your learning interventions. You can, for example, break up a long training day into three smaller sessions. This encourages the participant to remember and reinforce knowledge.Obviously, there are challenges tied to this approach as well. When selling a longer learning journey to a customer, they are often limited by time and budget.”

What do you think is the biggest misconception about learning?“I often see how the offering of training providers is far too comprehensive. They tend to forget that it is all about the foundation; from there on out, you can improve and personalise. Do you really need all those bells and whistles to convey the message? It is better to distinguish must-haves from nice-to-haves to preserve the added value of an intervention. Of course, it is important to offer something for every learning preference: a combination of interventions. This allows every individual to learn in their own way and choose interventions that match their preference.”Who or what would you recommend as a source of inspiration to other learning pioneers?“Right now, I am enthralled by Daniel Coyle’s The Talent Code. In his book, he describes how you can create talent. Being born with a natural talent is only part of a long journey towards excellence. Daniel explains how talent development happens in three ways. As soon as we like a topic, our learning process accelerates, as our brain forges the connections much quicker. The other two important drivers are deep practice, where you practice a lot and make many mistakes, and coaching. The coaching style should also align with your interests.The book discusses various theories and real-life examples of learning that will interest many L&amp;D experts. You can implement it immediately in your own training courses. Two thumbs up!”What do you do differently to challenge the status quo in learning or training?“I do various things. I read a lot and try to attend a range of events, like the aNewSpring webinars. I also like studying topics which are unfamiliar to me. KPE deals with a great range of subjects, so I can continuously challenge myself to discover new topics. Seek out innovations, instead of staying stuck in the same things.”In what way does reskilling or upskilling play a role in your own career or work?“It is vital not to overload the learner and use their own intrinsic motivation as a point of departure. Participants must be willing to sharpen their skillset and learn something new. If the will is not there, the application and final result of the learning intervention will lag behind. Therefore, it is crucial to sit down and talk with your employees at the outset of the journey, to identify the motivation and learning needs. This promotes a positive outcome for both the trainer provider and the learner.”

She&#039;s a learning and development specialist at Leerpunt KOEL. She never wants to stop developing, so she doesn&#039;t have a bucket list. It suggests that you could be finished someday.

For what part of your job can people wake you up at night?“Give me a design, a style document and the right guidelines and I’ll turn a boring PowerPoint or document into the right corporate identity. I’m not a graphic designer, but I love it. You can be sure that I take care of every detail. Think of the right colours, fonts, logos and images. We have also implemented Leerpunt KOEL’s visual identity in a tight and consistent manner throughout. A really satisfying job!”What challenge or problem in your job can keep you up at night?“We are currently working on a major project. We are redesigning our entire SOH training (In English: Doctor’s assistant consultation hours) for which new versions are starting up all the time. This course has been around for years and has everything a good blended course – with a duration of six months – needs: four course days, test and practice moments, an interactive digital learning environment in aNewSpring and a corresponding course folder. This revision goes right down to crossing the t’s and dotting the i’s, which also means that all adjustments have to be made synchronously. As a lover of learning, development, lists and design you can probably understand that I am in the right place in this challenging project.”What was the best or most valuable mistake you ever made?“I have two juicy examples. In my work, I am always looking for systems that can solve issues automatically. It has happened that an automatic message was sent to hundreds of people, which was not meant for them. My colleagues bore the brunt of it, they received all the responses. I have also shared a wrong screen during a presentation to potential customers. To this day, I blame Microsoft Teams for being so slow in responding, haha. My tip: make sure you don’t have any unnecessary screens open before you share something.”

What do you think is the biggest misconception about learning?“As a training provider, you can’t keep up with all the hypes surrounding new tools, integrations and platforms. It all sounds nice and interesting, but you can’t offer your learner everything, or they will get lost. Keep it simple and effective. Not only for your participant, but also for yourself. Make choices that you are good at. You know the drill… less is more!”Who or what would you recommend as a source of inspiration to other learning pioneers?“Imagine you are in a restaurant and have just had a delicious meal. Even though you are stuffed to the brim, you decide to order another cheese board. You then eat the whole board, because the cheeses are all slightly different and taste different. Try to do the same with learning; turn your training into a cheeseboard. Alternate learning activities and challenge your participants with small pieces of information through different ways. This example is from a training course I once followed on brain-friendly learning, from Prof. Stefan van der Stigchel. This training was and still is very valuable for my work. When I am developing, I often think: do I have a cheeseboard now? Are all the aspects on it?”What do you do differently to challenge the status quo in learning or training?“My work truly is my passion. That is why I am always on the lookout for the question: what else is there to discover? What is interesting to keep track of? aNewLetter is just the thing; it is all filtered and sorted out. It saves me time. Besides my work, I am active in handbiking (handbiking means pedalling with your arms). Every year in Austria there is the HandBikeBattle, in which you have to climb a mountain of 20 km and almost 1000 altitude metres, purely on arm strength. I am going to participate this year; in June to be precise. I have been training for this for four years.”
